New Stapp Interview - Talks about Creed, Solo Record

Check it out here guys:

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/...ll-casino.html

Quote: Less than a month after wrapping a tour with Creed that played amphitheaters and arenas, frontman Scott Stapp will launch a series of solo dates in which he'll present both Creed anthems and solo material in stripped-down, acoustic settings. That doesn't mean an end to the platinum-selling band; he says a new Creed album is in the works, as well as a new solo disc.

At 37, a soft-spoken Stapp sounds content and thoughtful, a far cry from the man whose bumpy personal life fueled the gossip blogs a few years ago.

QUESTION: This must be quite a change coming right off a Creed tour.

ANSWER: I'm very excited about it. I've been jamming all week with the guys. We're playing the songs how they were written. It's kind of like when Alice in Chains went acoustic, or Days of the New in '98 and '97, that kind of sound. We're keeping it true to the tempos and to the vibe, but it just really opens the door to show the songwriting. I think a lot of the fans are going to be shocked at how the songs translate acoustically.

Q: Were you thinking of big productions when you wrote the songs?

A: We were thinking the big rock show and the big rock song. We'll get a chorus, and we think, "That's going to sound really dramatic and powerful when we get that on electric guitar." Surprisingly, the thing is the songs still have such amazing power.

Q: What about you as a vocalist?

A: It's just opened me up vocally to do things I've never done before. The power of the acoustic show is the vibe of the whole thing. I never scream, so to speak. I'm really singing these songs. It really brings out a bluesy characteristic in my voice and some other things I wasn't aware of. A lot of the songs are presented, if you can believe it, with more conviction and more passion. It's a different scope.

Q: Is it hard to switch gears from a big tour?

A: It's kind of how we started. Long before we went to the public, it's what we did. Mark (Tremonti) and I were the guys at the party with the acoustic guitars. I'm sure it's going to give me a different feeling of excitement. And there's a little nervousness. I don't want to make a mistake in terms of communicating with the audience. I'm sure I'll get over that pretty quickly. A lot of people are really fans of my work and Creed's work, so I hope I see a lot of familiar faces.

Q: Are you comfortable that your fans know so much about you?

A: I love the connection with the fans. I love the meet-and-greets we do. I love to hear from fans and friends. I think the connection we share is a human, emotional thing. I tend to write from the gamut of emotions, and that's what ties us together.

Q: They seem very passionate.

A: Everything we've done, there's a connection there. You know, I want to maintain that. Also, the delivery of my vocal style . . . the only thing I can give you (is) an analogy . . . when I say prayers with my kids, my voice puts them to sleep in like two minutes. There's something palatable in my voice that, if doesn't turn people off initially, if they're open to just music and don't have any preconceived ideas, (that moves them).

Q: Speaking of your children, didn't you just get a tattoo with your son's name?

A: Yes. His birthday was July 4. I have my kids' names on my arm and my left shoulder.

Q: Do you have more tattoos in your future?

A: I've got a lot of work to do. My forearms are totally incomplete. As I live life, as things mean something to me, I want to remind myself of things that are very important to me at whatever level. I'm just a walking board.

Q: I read you worked with Mel Gibson on "The Passion of the Christ" album. Are you still in touch?

A: I wasn't buddies with the guy. I met him through a friend of his, and he said he was a fan of my work. (chuckling) It's not like I have his cellphone number.

Q: I wondered what you thought of the way the press handled his problems.

A: I don't know enough details to comment either way, but all I can say is you shouldn't talk to a woman like that or anybody. I think in the heat of passion and when you're desperately in love, everyone is guilty of having a moment of craziness and saying things we don't mean. It's human nature. But you don't do that.

Q: What's next for you? Another solo record?

A: I'm just about finishing up with my next solo album. I'm really happy with these songs. I'm an artist who doesn't like to stay in a rut. With Creed, we never thought "We're in a rock band and we can't write this or that." We just wrote what was inside of us. This record, it's really a labor of love and a complete departure from my last record.

Q: How so?

A: Just the people I got to work with, like Desmond Child and Diane Warren; the experience of working with such great songwriters and great talents, and learning from them. I was following them around, taking notes on everything they said and did. It really inspired me. I'm really excited about what's to come.

Q: You sound like you're in a really good space right now.

A: I used to say that I didn't write love songs, because it was too easy. I was just full of crap, because I never experienced true love. I have that with my wife and my three children, and it's really had an impact on how I express myself. I'm really anxious to get some of these songs out. I have turned a corner, and it's a corner I'm excited about. I wanted to create some music to the woman I love, the woman that saved my life, and when she hears it, it makes her feel good. Thank God we did that. Where I'm at, vocally and artistically and from a creative space: My life couldn't be better.
