Scott Stapp about internet pirates...

I founded this one on www.musicunited.org

Scott Stapp, Songwriter & Performer

"Everyone I know is excited about all the possibilities the Internet has to offer. As a musician, the Internet has made it possible for me to share my music with people that could have never been reached by conventional methods. It has been taboo for artists to speak out concerning the business side of their music. As a child I created music to express my inner thoughts and feelings, and that purity has stayed with me throughout. The day I decided to share my music with the world, was the day I decided to walk the fine line between art and commerce. I have been blessed in that I do what I love and can support my family with what I create. When my music is given away it is stealing. I need not defend my motives for making music, but the distribution of my music has made me business conscious. I have decided to sell my music to anyone who wants it, that is how I feed my family, just like a doctor, lawyer, judge, or teacher. Not to insult anyone's intelligence, but my music is like my home. These file sharing services are sneaking in the back door and robbing me blind."

"Robbing me blind" would imply he's virtually bankrupt.. last I checked he was doing pretty well and still growing the bank account. I agree with the basics but come on.. I'm sick of rockstars making it sound like they're going hungry over this when in fact it's more like they only have $100 million in the bank instead of $102 million....

No. I think it just means people shouldn't complain when all they seem to be missing is pocket change to them.

Absolutely I agree that in a way it is stealing, but what about the stuff they don't release? All the acoustics, b-sides, live versions, music videos, tv appearances, alternate versions, and all the others. Just realase it and get the money for crying out loud!

This is actually pretty old. I recall Scott saying this long ago, when this was actually an issue.

I believe those comments from Scott were from when Napster was being taken to court. I remember him disapproving of what Napster was doing.

I really don't care how wealthy someone is.....a musician's music is their product...they sell it, and make an income from it....I don't really think how rich they are should make it okay to take it without paying for it.

There were lots of old time rock and rollers who never made it rich cause they were cheated out of their royalties by their own managers and record companies, now artists have their own fans added to that.

I buy all my CD's...I may have one or two bootleg Creed things that people have graciously provided to me....but any commercially released CD....I bought and paid for it.....if I copy it....I'm copying it for my use, in order to preserve the original, or to provide a friend with songs to listen to in order to decide if they want to buy something.

And true....this article was actually done back when Napster was giving way anyone and everyone's stuff for virtually free....

The only pirate cd I have is Rush of Blood... from Coldplay... but I don't even listen to it...

But mp3 help me to decide if I'll buy the album or not. I d/l about 3 or 4 songs if I'm thinking of buying an album If I like (most of) them, I'll buy it. I'm not into wasting money like I did several times before mp3 advent.

I totally agree with him!! The downloading have of course opened many doors for him and for Creed, but if I was a star I wouldn't be too crazy about the thought that people were downloading my music instead of buying it!!
