article about U2 ticket fiasco

well the relevant part anyway that shows how it should be done and how U2 stuffed it up big time.......

But the U2 case demonstrates all too clearly the ill will that can arise when sales of special tickets go awry. "You've got to take care of those people," says Kelly Curtis, manager of the grunge band Pearl Jam, referring to die-hard fans. "They'll turn on you if you don't."

In the case of U2, the finger-pointing already has begun. People close to the band blame Ticketmaster, saying the ticket seller's equipment failed to keep up with demand; meanwhile, people close to Ticketmaster say the fault lies with U2, adding that the band's management should have limited the number of fans allowed to join the club.

Pearl Jam's fan organization, known as Ten Club, long has used a lower-technology method to allocate tickets for its members, precisely to avoid the kind of problem that occurred with the U2 tour. The band issues a number to each Ten Club member, in the order in which they join. It then allocates the best seats at each venue to members who order them, in order of their membership numbers.

***The band plans to execute the same system, by hand, for a nine-month world tour kicking off sometime this summer.

I had a feeling the presales took over the numbers, along with the %$@#@#$# brokers who probably have some way to skirt the official system. It was ridiculous. I don't have tickets, even though, at precisely 10 a.m. on Saturday, I tried to order them. There was not one single ticket available when the official public sale started. That's just wrong. There were hundreds of people who waited hours in line at the venue who were turned away. They have to do something about that. There are too many ways to get tickets now, with presale, phone, internet, and at the actual venue. Shows are selling out in minutes. Plus, the freakin presale went on for DAYS. I know with Metallica it's maybe one or two days before the public sale.

its crazy and the scalpers no doubt bought up big and now the real fans are going to have to pay a premium on ebay or outside the venues. there are bands doing it right like pj and metallica and U2 should have followed their lead. that quote by kelly curtis is spot on, if you don't look after your diehard fans they will turn on you.

Right on. Sometimes I wonder if Ticketmaster isn't selling a bunch of them on eBay. I had read somewhere a while ago that they were going to start saving premium seats for eBay and other similar-type auctions. I've bought both presale and public sale for Metallica and never had a problem. They do it right, indeed. Even PJ sells out fast, but I still managed to get far enough up in the line to make the cut.

Really. Me, too. The prices as set were bad enough. 50-160 dollars. That's outrageous. The last time I saw Pearl Jam, the tickets were all the same price: $37. Much more reasonable. Even Metallica had a couple of prices, but the most expensive was $75.

someone posted over at the PJ board this letter sent to U2 fan club members. while i'm glad the band has seen the error of their ways and how the fans have being put out the tone of this letter sounds quite arrogant IMO.

This is not something that I would normally do, but I feel that I have
to do something to redress this situation.

There was a mess up in the way the tickets were distributed through
U2.com for the Vertigo pre-sale. Some of it was beyond our control, but
some of it wasn't.

I am now in the process of figuring out a way of distributing the
tickets for our intended return to North America in the fall. The only
fair way of doing this, is to give U2 Propaganda members, who are now
U2.com members, priority in the queue.

After that, people will be given priority in the order in which they joined.
Many people who joined U2.com and didn't get tickets are
understandably angry. They now have the option to get a full refund of
their subscription fee.

The idea that our long-time U2 fans and scalpers competed for U2
tickets through our own website is appalling to me. I want to apologise
to you who have suffered that.

If your U2.com pre-sale experience has left you disappointed, I hope
this will go some way towards reassuring you of our total commitment
to our audience.

Slainte
Larry.

By the way, a note to those so-called U2 fans who are quick to accuse
U2 of unseemly behaviour, I've only got two words for you...

Hmmm, so they base fan loyalty on a paid subscription to the fan club? That's lame. Just because I don't belong to the club doesn't mean I'm not a longtime or loyal fan. They should just redo their presale system. Obviously, it doesn't work. If the fan-club membership is too large, then go to a lottery system. It's not fair to give all the friggin tix to the presale people.
