I think the official reason was creative or personal differences, but it happened a few weeks after Marshall went on a radio show and trashed Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, saying something like Vedder wishes he was half the writer Scott Stapp is. The band issued some sort of statement afterward apologizing for Marhsall's remarks and a few weeks after that, Marshall was no longer with the band.
