That double standard dates way back and is simply about procreation. People had to be concerned about the paternity of a child in order to see to it that he or she was provided for. Also instict was for a man to "spread his seed" so to ensure the continuation of his genes simply by quantity of offspring because of the higher chance of dying young. These needs were incorporated into laws and religions and have pervaded into even current times.
