THE VOICE OF STAPP???wtf????

I have long been a fan of scott stapp. I saw him in lemoore california about 2-3 years ago when his solo album was out. he was excellent.I now have to say his voice is decaying... what is up with him not being able to carry even the smallest of notes anymore. The album sounds good but live i just do not think he has it anymore. Do you guys think his solo album ruined his vocal chords.. or alcohal................

Re: THE VOICE OF STAPP???wtf????

Clearly he's not taking care of himself. The fact that he still chain-smokes is proof of this.

They did their best to digitally tune his voice on Full Circle, but you can still hear the difference.

He absolutely butchered a few of the classics when I saw them live this year. It was very disappointing. He used to sound great live.

Re: THE VOICE OF STAPP???wtf????

A lot of vocalists don't take good care of their voices, it's too easy not to, especially if you are living like a rock star.

Nevermind smoking, even alcohol is awful for your vocal chords. When you sing your vocal chords swell up and are sometimes even sore depending on how good your technique is, then the first thing you do is drink a beer or take a shot. Ever poured alcohol on an open wound? The only difference here is that it sucks all the moisture out of your vocal chords, which is what they need to properly repair themselves.

It's just so important to take those things in moderation, as much as that sounds like a health class banner. If you don't eat right and don't take care of yourself you will get sick, you get sick the first thing you do is lose your voice, you sing through that you do damage, you drink alcohol you do damage, you smoke you do damage, etc.

Surgery also will radically change what your voice sounds like. Just look at stapp or rod stewart or david draiman, etc.

How many of these threads do we need? Really? It's not 1998. Stapp's vocal muscles have been through a lot. Deal.

Spot on! I haven't even been on here long and I'm already getting really bored of hearing all this.

well if your bored with it it is a reality stapp is not a voice anymore.. damn i have heard karaoke done better than him... I just don't think this was a good idea if he was not going to come on the tour without being a gameface player.. he seems like he just goes as it is... however very dissapointing.

Re: THE VOICE OF STAPP???wtf????

I haven't been the biggest supporter of Scott Stapp, but let me take a stab. I was at a concert about 3 weeks ago, and he sounded great. It surprised me, cause I had been listening to some stuff on youtube and didn't think it sounded good at all. And the thing was, when he talked, he sounded hoarse, like he was about to lose his voice, so I kept waiting for him to crack...nothing. Yeah they've been making people sound good in the studio for years (taylor swift, lead singer for puddle of mudd, etc.) but sometimes it just depends on the night. Singing is like anything else...Sometimes you got it going on, and sometimes not so much. You got him on a bad night. I got a good night. And yeah his voice is different. It's different than when I saw them in '02. We've heard all the stories. Alcohol, drugs (prescribed or not), smoking will do it, age, stress, whatever. I guess what I'm getting at is give the guy a break. Either that or let's see what you got.

He's human, he's been through a lot. These types of things happen to a lot of people. He's not the only singer to go through vocal issues like this. If I remember correctly, one of the reasons why Brett Scallions left Fuel is because he was having all sorts of vocal problems.

Re: THE VOICE OF STAPP???wtf????

I will agree that the tonite show wasnt that great at all. But how many times have you watched one of your favorite bands on that kind of stage and it was Disappointing??? Alice in Chains was on the tonite show last week, and they didnt sound all that great (I saw them live in philly a couple months ago and they were incredible). I firmly believe that bands dont take doing shows like that AS seriously as an actual live show and they dont prepare as well for them. (even though they probably should because its promoting their album)

And I dont want to hear that he's been through alot. Perfect example is Chris Cornell. He's been belting out songs since the late 80's starting with temple of the dog, then soundgarden, then a solo project, then Audioslave, and now another solo project....add in surgery to his voice box because he literally blew out his own voice and he still sounds incredible live. I saw time in April in Philly which was the 7th time ive seen him live and he sounded better than ever. If you want any better evidence, check out his performace on 9/11 at the Tonite Show. He sounded awesome.

I truly think Stapp is done and doesnt have the voice anymore. His voice sounds AWESOME in the album, but how much of it was edited and enhanced digitally?

That was actually proven false. That was just the guitarist being a douche.

Then don't listen if it is that disappointing to you. Creed has plenty of fans who will support them no matter what. They just came off a grueling tour for us - the fans. I saw them in Atlanta and they were awesome. I saw them again in Birmingham, and I could tell that Stapp was tired. But of course he was tired - they were all tired! But I didn't enjoy it any less. They have such an awesome stage presence and put so much heart into their concerts. Anyway, we shouldn't go to a concert to hear them sound perfect. We should go to hear them live...mistakes and all.

I remember in the last tour that Scallions participated in, that he was lip syncing according to fans. I don't know how true that is, but Carl Bell was being a douche. That is fact.

Stapp should get advice from Phil Anselmo. He is the king of messing up the vocal chords but he sounds great live at the present. Maybe because he is SINGING more nowadays.

Are you kidding me, Scott Stapp's has a beautiful voice...people get a life! when are you going to get off Stapp and every move he makes? Leave the man alone once and for all, I mean come on if you have nothing nice to say then go away. No one cares about your negativity. Obviously the NFL and other major TV networks like his amazing voice otherwise they would not keep asking him to sing at MAJOR LIVE TV events.

He STILL sounds amazing! Who are we to judge???? Stapp puts' on the BEST LIVE SHOW EVER, You can feel his heart and soul in his performances.

# 2 Album on Billboards after 7 years gone!! I'd like to see any band out there get the same results.
I have been to six of the Creed shows and will pay to see more. Lets start to have some peace on this board and start with some FRESH news. To all the negative people, I pray for you, obviously you have an issue with your self to sit behind a computer and bash someone.

There are fans that are honest. And there are fans that would pay to chew the left over bubble gum that their idol spits out on the ground.
I'm guessing you are the latter....

No one is bashing Stapp.
If anything, we need to quit having extremists come on here and accuse people of hating on the guy, when we are generally concerned about the guy's voice....which is extremely lacking at the moment.

You can hear what you want to hear, but he's not 100%.
This is not just my opinion. This is a fact.

Thanks for your post. I mostly agree with that. I think the main difference in Stapp's voice today is that he doesn't have the raspy voice that he used to have. His voice is now more smooth and melodic, but many people don't like that because it now sounds like he has less power than he used to have. The truth is that he's intentionally singing like that in order to preserve his voice and sing in a technically correct way. His voice sounds a lot different than it used to, but it doesn't sound that much worse in my opinion. I still think that he's a great vocalist and doesn't deserve all of the criticism that he's receiving.

I agree with it being less raspy. But what you call smooth and melodic, I call flat. Listen to live videos of One Last Breath and Torn and Bullets and tell him if he is intentionally singing like that. If he is then he belongs in a mental institution.

To me it just seems like Stapp has been very inconsistent. He sounded terrible in some of the videos that I listened to, but he sounded exactly like his old self in other videos. I thought he sounded great on Rockline last night. It just seems like he doesn't have very much endurance these days.

yah , why do you guys get offendes so easy. I am a stapp fan like all of you but reality is reality, he is a great showman and much charisma but his voice is not like it used to... anyhow the album sounds great and the band is kicking ass.... that is a major plus for his career and the group

I noticed this difference in his voice too, and it made me very disapointed.. But I'm a fan, and I love this band since always, so I support them! I prefer Scott back even with his voice like this, to if creed didn't came back because of this. (sorry my english, I'm brazilian)

I hope you didn't hear Kris Allen on Conan yesterday. Really bad. I was reading an interesting discussion from a Adam Lambert fan on how such an exceptional singer like him could lose to such an inferior one as happened on Idol. They said what I expect long to be true, personality makes up nowadays for alot of what is looked for in singers. This fan wrote one of the best critiques on singers and their appeal that I've seen in a long time.

Don't you just hate opinions?

Telling another person he's wrong with no proper regard of his opinion, it's a bit rude. You could atleast put "in your opinion" at the end of your post, people are allowed to disagree with you.

Lol. If it were something completely subjective, sure.
If you want to actually measure Stapp on a professional level, and since I work with singers I think I can allow myself to do so, then no.

He is not better. Period. P-E-R-I-O-D.

If you think he is, cool beans. Never said I had a problem with an opinion. But if you want to say something in a matter of fact tonality, expect it to be argued. For Stapp to tell the fans he sounds better, only means that he's either delusional, holding back, or trying to ignore it. And it's safe to say that he is not holding back anything.

Does he sound better to you? Maybe.
Is he a better vocalist? Certainly not.

I love the guy to death, but I call BS when I see it.

It's implied when someone posts that it's their opinion. The first thing you're taught in high school English classes is that you don't write "in my opinion" in anything that's meant to be persausive.

seems like a lot of creed fans are reluctant to realize he is not as good as he was in 99. I love creed the band but stapp is probably out of shape or needs to go back old school. He really is funny these days compared to the raw intensity and hunger he once had. he is too mellow now and sounds mature in a way but i prefer the older stapp, he was the best. now he is just another singer.
