Originally leet was used in the early days of hackers, they would communicate with numbers because it was hard for the government and business to interperate, but soon enough the code was cracked and they have moved on to other ways, but leet was picked up by the online gamers, as a way to confuse their opponent but now is just standard communication, or at least thats what i understand of leet.
