Jen the RN.......HELP ME!

Ok, I have had this crappy crappy cough it seems like forever now and I went to the doctor and they gave me some medicine and it made me groggy a lot so I went back and asked for something that would keep me normal and they gave me a prescription. It doesn't seem to be helping, Robitussin doesn't either and I have even tried my childrens Donatussin because it works great for them, but nothing is helping. Could it be something worse, like Bronchitus, something I will need an antibiotic for or is the medicine they gave me not worth a flip. This is what it is:

Benzonatate 100mg 1 capsule, 3 times a day as needed for cough.

I cannot remember the first stuff they gave me, it worked, but I didn't feel like myself.

Thanks in advance. Carrie

Carrie, I had the same thing for about 2 weeks (Jen and I were going back and forth in PM's to help diagnose me). I went to the docs, they did a chest xray (I thought I may have broken a rib because of the pain I had) and everything came back clear. I was put on Biaxin (antibiotic) and Guaifenex tablets 600mgs. twice a day. Seems to be knocking it out of me. I'm still coughing but not nearly as bad. I was up for 6 nights straight coughing and gagging. It was bad. Hope you are feeling better.

I know, I cannot even sleep. I have been taking my pills, cough syrup, water, a handful of cough drops and propping my head up when I go to bed and I still cough and gag. I even threw up at work and my eyes were all watery and crap. My whole body drags when I cough. It sounds like I am a 20 year smoker and I have never smoked a day in my life.

Well all I have to say is there are so many things that they can put you on and I am not familiar with what med they gave you. Most people who have a cold who go to the doctor, don't get an antibiotic because doctors are likely to say it is a virus. I had a similar situation the week of Christmas and did not go to the doctor, I was so bad I actually could not speak for 2 days barely!!!!!! It started out as a sore throat and went into my chest as a wicked cough, still have it to an extent. Best thing to do is:

Drink lots of fluids, non caffeine!

Get lots of sleep!!!!!

Take a multivitamin

Take over the counter meds a cough syrup with Guaeffesin in it, it is an expectorant to help get the phlegm up. Such as Robitussin CF!!!

If it gets worse or you run a fever above 101.5 get your butt back to the doctor!!!!!!

OK that will be $5   I should open an "ask a nurse forum" kind of like Lucy from the peanuts and her advice station!!!

That's exactly how I was! I got sick a time or two while coughing at night in bed. I had no voice for a few days. If my doctor found out that I went to work AND the Creed concert on NYE he'd put me in the hospital (from him kicking my ass!) I was in so much pain after that show, but luckily I wasn't coughing as bad during the show.

LOL, Jen, that's 25.00 cheaper then my co-pay. What a deal!!!!
I will take your advice. I think that cough medicine they gave me is a tasteless tic-tac. It has not helped at all. Thanks for all of your help guys. I appreciate it.

That's a good idea Jen, but you'll need to have some sort of sign when you are on the bb, like "The Nurse is ___" When you sign off it'll say "out" and when you log in it'll say "in".

I have never been able to gain weight. I am about 19 pounds underweight. I gained the right amount when I was pregnant with both my kids, but I lost it all back. I wore my size 3 jeans home from the hospital. I was 99 when I got pregnant with both of them. I was 153 when I went in the delivery room with Lauren and 137 with Tyler. I weigh 104 now. I am 5'3" and my doctor said I should be in the 120's to be in my weight range. I have tried all kinds of stuff, but my mom said not to worry, that it will all spread when I hit 40 anyway. LOL, I have a ways to go until 40 though.
